Japan has dozens of different flavors of KitKats…and I love KitKats! So every time I go to Japan, I make it my mission to try a new flavor of KitKat. So far, we’ve taken a look at the Azuki RedBean Sandwich KitKat and the Rum Raisin KitKat (which was really good). Today we’ll be taking a look at the ‘Otona No Amasa’ KitKat.

Otona No Amasa literally means “sweetness for adults.” This KitKat is basically a less sweet, dark chocolate version of the regular KitKat. It’s supposed to be ‘only for adults’ because of its slightly bitter flavor.

Packaging:

KitKats in Japan have really great packaging. The box is made from a durable matte laminated cardboard and has clasps to close the box once opened. The all black box definitely makes this KitKat look more exotic and luxurious than others. This box contained 6 mini-KatKats. On the back of the box is a short description about this flavor:

“Using the crush and spread process, we have thinly spread the bitter chocolate inside and outside the KitKat to achieve an exquisite balance unlike others before it.”

Taste:

I actually like this dark chocolate version of the KitKat over the original. While I love the original KitKat, I can’t eat more than a few because it’s pretty sweet. On the other hand, I can eat these Otona no Amasa KitKats forever! I feel like they were really able to achieve the perfect sweetness balance. Texture wise, it’s pretty much the same as other KitKats except it’s not as melty in your mouth since it’s made from dark chocolate.

TLDR:

It’s a slightly less sweet, dark chocolate version of the regular KitKat. I prefer these over the original KitKat.
