Bumrah Back in Action as India Intensifies Bowling Practice for Edgbaston Test
Jasprit Bumrah made a return to training on Saturday, marking a significant shift in focus towards bowling during Team India's second day of preparations for the crucial Edgbaston Test.
Bumrah's presence at the nets garnered considerable attention, especially given the lingering questions about his availability for the second Test against England. He had skipped the opening session on Friday, adding to the speculation surrounding his fitness.
Following a disappointing five-wicket defeat at Headingley, which left them trailing 0-1 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the Indian squad commenced their practice sessions on Friday. While the entire squad participated, the absence of Bumrah and fellow pacer Prasidh Krishna from active drills raised concerns regarding their readiness for the Birmingham Test.
Saturday's session, however, provided a much-needed morale boost for India's pace attack. Bumrah, Prasidh, and Mohammed Siraj were all seen bowling at the nets. Siraj also continued his batting practice from the previous day. Their return injected renewed vigor into India's preparations, as the team aims to stage a comeback in Birmingham.
Among the batsmen, Sai Sudharsan, who debuted in the Headingley Test, was the first to practice at the nets on Day 2. Notably absent from Saturday's training were captain Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
All four batsmen had engaged in extensive batting practice on Friday, with Gill and Pant spending considerable time at the nets.
While Bumrah's return is a positive indication, his inclusion in the Edgbaston XI remains uncertain. The 31-year-old bowled a demanding 44 overs in the series opener and is scheduled to participate in only three of the five Tests as part of a workload management strategy. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, following the Headingley loss, emphasized that the decision regarding Bumrah's participation would be made on a match-to-match basis, regardless of the series situation.
With bowling now taking center stage in India's practice sessions, the team hopes their key bowlers will be fully prepared as they seek to level the series at Edgbaston.
