Hello, I have an EVGA 980 Ti that I got used a few months back. It was a little bent when I got it, but I didn't think much of it. When I benchmark it, it gets bad scores, and it crashes a lot while playing games like Fortnite at medium ish settings. Also, GPU-Z detects it as PCIe x2 3.0 instead of x16. I had an EVGA 960 before this, and it worked fine. Obviously, it performed worse than the 980 Ti, but it was in the top 90th percentile for 960s. I don't think it's my PC, but this is my build in case: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bBDf28. I tried mining some crypto as passive income and with T-Rex mining ETH, NiceHash mining BTG, and Salad doing whatever it does, the CPU and even my integrated GPU! did better than the 980 Ti. I can provide additional info, but I am wondering what to do next. Thanks in advance!

I do underclock it, as it seems more stable when I do so. Is this right?

I prefer msi ab but yeah underclock till it stable to do what you do with it. Overtime the cards wear out especially with mining.Mining will usually kill your card dead eventually.

maxwell/pascal (900 and 10 series) degrades even completely stock after 4-5 years.
underclocking should fix it.

Yeah I tried mining for 1 day xD. It didn't work well lmao. Thanks for the help and quick responses!

I will try doing these suggestions later today as I don't have time right now but will keep you all updated What can I do to fix my GPU? (19)

Alright, I went into BIOS and I found these settings related to PCIe. I left PEG and PCH ASPM on Auto. I found a setting called 3dMark01 Enhancement, so I turned it on. It said it's supposed to increase the scores or something? I turned Re-size BAR support on as well, though I don't think it's supported by GPU's before the 30 series (correct me if I'm wrong.) Finally, I found a 'plugged-in' device list, and sure enough, the GPU showed up and said PCIe 3.0 x16 @1.0 x2. I'm kind of lost right now, I have no idea what to do going forwards. It would be great if you all had some suggestions What can I do to fix my GPU? (20).

FAQs

Is it possible to repair a GPU? ›

A faulty GPU can absolutely be fixed, depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

How can I tell if my GPU is bad? ›

If you find your screen is freezing, going black, or giving your blue screen errors, it could be a sign that your graphics card is dying. However, these problems can also be caused by malware, memory (RAM) problems, or even a dying hard drive. Check if your visuals are lagging or stuttering.

What causes GPU failure? ›

Overheating: Excessive heat can damage the GPU and other card components. Driver issues: Outdated or corrupt drivers can cause performance problems. Physical damage: Mishandling or impacts can damage the card. Power supply issues: Inadequate power can affect graphics card performance.

What damages the GPU? ›

Often, overheating from dust or lint in your computer is to blame. Other factors can include faulty installation to the motherboard, frequent overclocking, or a power surge from an electrical outage. Just like everything else in your computer, your GPU is subject to wear and tear.

What causes a dying GPU? ›

Moisture buildup on the card causing component damage. Overheating caused by too much dirt or debris stuck on the cooling-components. Overheating caused by broken or worn bearings on the cooling fans. Running the graphics card on games with incompatible software drivers.

Will a PC start with a dead GPU? ›

No. During the boot sequence, the Power On Self-Test (POST) checks all the necessary software and hardware needed for the computer to boot properly. If your GPU is not working or absent, most motherboards will let you know with a series of beeps.

Does heating the GPU fix it? ›

Instead only the GPU has to be heated up for some time and its internals will “magically” fix themselves. Also, your “fixed” GPU might not last very long(maybe a few days, weeks or months) if the IC(integrated circuit) continues to operate in the same conditions that led to the failure in the first place.

How long will a GPU last? ›

Most graphics cards have a functional lifespan ranging from 3-5 years on average before needing an upgrade. However, aspects like usage frequency, cooling solutions, maintenance, and the specific model all impact how long your GPU can last before showing its age.

How to tell if a GPU is fried? ›

  1. Graphical Glitches Gradually Worsening. This is one of the most obvious signs a graphics card is reaching the end of its lifespan. ...
  2. Strange Fan Noises. A second, less obvious sign of a dying GPU is when its fans stop behaving properly. ...
  3. Crashes Galore. ...
  4. Significant Frame Drops. ...
  5. Blue Screen of Death.

How to test your GPU? ›

To check your graphics card performance on Windows 10 and Windows 11, launch the Task Manager app from the Start menu. Under the “Performance” tab, select the GPU option to view a detailed summary of your graphics card performance metrics such as current memory usage and GPU temperature.

What is the most common GPU failure? ›

To sum it up, GPU failures often come down to a few common issues. Overclocking, power surges, excessive heat, inadequate airflow, and capacitor quality. Recognize these problems, and you're a step closer to preventing them. And prevention is always better than cure.

What does a GPU crash look like? ›

You might experience a black screen, a frozen display, or the operating system notifying you that the graphics driver has stopped responding.

How do I clean my GPU? ›

You can use a soft, lint-free cloth with 70 to 75% isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe off the stains or particles. 3. After wiping, wait for the surface of the thermal module or the back of the graphics card to dry naturally. If there are still marks or stains, use a dry cloth to gently wipe them.

Does Nvidia repair GPUs? ›

NVIDIA will repair, or if repair is not reasonably possible, replace your defective Warranted Product. Replacement parts and/or products may include new or refurbished parts or products and are warranted only until the expiration of the original Warranty Period.

What will happen if GPU is broken? ›

If the GPU breaks, then you can't use any heavy computings on your computer. Your computer will either use your integrated graphics card (such as Intel HD for Intels, Radeon for older AMDs, or Vega 8 or Vega 10 for AMD Ryzen) or your motherboard's graphics adapter, if your processor doesn't have an integrated graphics.

Can you just replace GPU? ›

Can I Just Change My Graphics Card? The short answer is yes, as long as you have a free PCI/PCI-e slot available. If your computer doesn't have one of these slots, you should probably be reading an article about upgrading computers, not changing video cards.
