SALT LAKE CITY — According to new data from Instacart, Utahns have a considerable sweet tooth.

Looking at each state’s candy-buying habits, Utah took the number one spot with the highest share of candy purchases. Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and Washington rounded out the top five. Nationally, 82% of Americans partake in purchasing candy for the Halloween season.

Utah’s candy of choice

Peanut M&M’s reign supreme in Utah coming in as the top purchased candy. When putting candies head to head, Utahns have their favorites. Taking a closer look at the state’s confection preference Utahn’s choose:

  • Twizzlers over Red Vines
  • Dum-Dums over Charms Blow Pops
  • Smarties over SweeTarts
  • Trolli Gummies over HARIBO Gummies
  • Milk Duds over Whoppers

The US is nutty for peanut butter

While Utah and most of the west prefer peanut M&Ms, much of east lists Reese’s Peanut Butter cups as their go-to candy. Instacart found that 84% of those buying Halloween candy will pick chocolate.

Additionally, the research found that 63% of shoppers now love a kind of Halloween candy that they hated as a kid such as licorice and candy corn. In contrast, 59% of those surveyed, reported they now hate a type of Halloween candy that they loved as a kid. Candies listed were candy corn, gum and sour candy.

Shoppers may want to to stock up early. In August, Hershey announced they were having a rough time meeting demand.
