UK chocolate bars with most calories - one contains more than a McDonald's (2024)

A recent study has shown one popular chocolate bar contains more calories than a McDonald's burger, and health experts have advised people should avoid consuming too much sugar due to health risks

There's no denying we all love a chocolate bar from time to time, and sometimes, we'll unwrap the tasty treat without even considering the calories and how regular consumption of the sweet stuff can impact our health.

If you've had a hard day, or you need something quick and easy on the go, the temptation to grab your favourite confectionary is real - but a shocking study has revealed that there's a chocolate bar that contains more calories than a McDonald's burger.

MailOnline examined the nutritional content of almost 100 different types of chocolate - from Cadbury's to Mars to Nestle, and the results showed that some bars contain as many as 380 calories, which is more than a Maccies cheeseburger, which is thought to contain around 300 calories.

Experts have warned that people should eat chocolate in moderation, as consuming too much sugar can result in health risks such as higher blood pressure, diabetes, and weight gain.

According to the study, the Twix Xtra White Chocolate Bar contains the highest amount of calories at 376. The milk chocolate and salted caramel varieties came in second and were found to have 370 and 368 respectively.

Cadbury's Double Decker Duo contains 342 calories, while the calories in a Yorkie Raisin and Biscuit Duo are slightly lower at 336. Meanwhile, the Cadbury Wispa Gold Chocolate Duo was also quite calorific, having been found to contain 336.

Also on the list included the KitKat Chunky Duo (330), Cadbury's Boost Duo (324), M&S Swiss Blond Chocolate (229) and Maltesers Kingsize (294).

The NHS recommends that "generally, the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 calories a day for women and 2,500 for men", but the amount of calories needed will depend on multiple factors, including "your age, your lifestyle, and your size."

They also advise that people should avoid consuming more than 30g of free sugars (those added to food or drinks) a day, which is roughly equivalent to seven sugar cubes.

Dr Kawther Hashem, campaign lead at Action on Sugar, said: "It will come as no surprise that chocolate bars contain sugars and calories. However, 10 teaspoons of sugar per packet, three teaspoons more than an adult's daily maximum recommended intake, is unnecessary."
