Shark Diving in Caribbean

The Caribbean is a wonderful place to dive with some of the large apex predator sharks and more docile species of shark too. The Caribbean Sea contains some of our most popular dive destinations and will provide a stunning backdrop for your holiday. Whether you want to swim with sharks once or throughout your trip, we can offer a superb-value dive holiday package.

You can swim with sharks that our dive boat guides and instructors spot in the open water, take part in near-shore shark feeds or catch them on a safari dive, which will let you see lots of reef fishes and other marine life too. There are also options for shark cage diving in the Caribbean.

We offer many incredible dive trips in the Caribbean where you can swim with sharks, as well as do other types of dives, and these include the following amazing Caribbean locations:

Shark Diving in Belize

Belize is one of the Caribbean’s premier tourist destinations and offers a wonderful opportunity to dive with docile nurse sharks in the warm shallow waters by the coast. For more adventurous shark divers there is also a chance to swim with large hammerhead sharks further out to sea.

There are also many small islands and atolls off the coast of Belize, which will have excellent safari dives where sharks regularly congregate with turtles, stingrays and other marine life too.

The Turneffe Atoll is one example, which requires a fairly high level of experience to navigate, but allows you to swim with bull sharks, reef sharks and whale sharks at certain times of the year.

Shark Diving in the Bahamas

There are many Bahamas shark diving sites including Tiger beach, where you can view smaller tiger sharks close to the shore. Tiger sharks are a popular type of marine life to swim with all over the world, such as in the Maldives where we offer several dedicated tiger shark diving trips.

You can also enjoy many resort and liveaboard Bahamas diving trips, which will give you a lot of opportunities to swim with various types of sharks – including bull sharks in the open water.
One of the best options for shark diving in the Caribbean is on our Bahamas Master Liveaboard, which will get you up close and personal with reef sharks, lemon sharks and oceanic whitetips.

There are several other dive sites on our trip that will keep you close to nurse sharks. One such site is Diver’s Thirst, which also has large schools of fish and plenty of other diverse marine life.

Cove Ledge is another fantastic dive site where you can swim with nurse sharks, in comfortably warm and quite shallow waters of up to 13 m – suitable for most skill levels.

    FAQs and Useful Information

The following are some common questions about shark diving in the Caribbean:

Can you swim with sharks in the Caribbean?

Yes. Bull sharks, reef sharks, great hammerhead sharks, nurse sharks, oceanic white tip sharks, tiger sharks and whale sharks all swim in the Caribbean Sea – so scuba divers and snorkelers often seek them out. Under the guidance of an instructor, you can swim with all of these types of sharks safely.

    Do bull sharks attack snorkelers?

Bull sharks, tiger sharks and great white sharks are the three main species of sharks known to have bitten humans. Sharks usually pose little to no threat to divers, and with the experience of an instructor, the chances of an attack are low. Opting for shark cage diving in Caribbean waters will eliminate the chances of any attacks, even though they are rare, which may provide some peace of mind.

What kind of sharks are in the Bahamas?

Tiger sharks, reef sharks, nurse sharks, oceanic white tips and lemon sharks are the most common types of sharks in the Bahamas. Hammerhead sharks are also known to be frequently seen by divers. In the open sea, whale sharks will swim in Bahamian waters too – but this is seasonal and can be difficult to predict.

    FAQs

Where is the best place to dive with sharks in the Caribbean? ›

Mexico, Belize and Honduras are some of the best places to dive or snorkel with whale sharks in the Caribbean, while the most exhilarating shark encounters can be found in the Caribbean's far north, most notably around the islands of the Bahamas.

Is it safe to swim in the Caribbean sharks? ›

Bull sharks, reef sharks, great hammerhead sharks, nurse sharks, oceanic white tip sharks, tiger sharks and whale sharks all swim in the Caribbean Sea – so scuba divers and snorkelers often seek them out. What happens if you see a shark while scuba diving? ›

    Don't panic or swim away

If you encounter a shark while diving, it's important to remain calm and avoid swimming away quickly. Swimming away quickly can trigger the shark's predatory instincts, and it may start to follow you. Instead, remain still and slowly swim backward to keep a safe distance from the shark.

How much does it cost to go shark diving in the Bahamas? ›

On average, a shark diving experience in The Bahamas could cost anywhere from $130 USD to $440 USD per person depending on the location and the shark species you are looking for. This price does not include transportation, equipment rental and speciality courses.

Which Caribbean country has the most sharks? ›

The beautiful Bahamas should be on every traveler's bucket list. Its powdery sand beaches are heavenly, and the array of aquatic adventures that await is neverending.

What beach is the shark bite capital of the world? ›

New Smyrna Beach, the "shark bite capital of the world," hands down, is the most dangerous beach in Florida for shark bites. Florida had 16 reported unprovoked shark bites in 2023, according to a study released by the Florida Program for Shark Research.

How aggressive are Caribbean reef sharks? ›

The Caribbean reef shark infrequently attacks humans. In general, a shark attack on a human is behaviorally similar to an attack upon natural prey. A human is more susceptible to being attacked if the shark is cornered and feels that there is no escape route.

Do great whites go to the Caribbean? ›

The white shark occurs worldwide in temperate and subtropical waters, often migrating seasonally to follow its preferred temperature range (approximately 50 to 80 °F). In the U.S. Atlantic, they range from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Caribbean.

Do shark attacks happen in shallow water? ›

Most shark attacks happen in shallow waters, like waist deep, where sharks are more likely to find feed such as seals and birds. Most sharks also enjoy the murky-ness of shallow waters. Humans surfing or floating in shallow waters resemble animals off shore going for a dip.

What to do if a shark approaches you while diving? ›

Let it have it – no catch is worth the risk of personal injury. If a shark begins to get too interested in you by coming closer and closer, the best strategy is to leave the water – swim quickly but smoothly, watching the shark all the time, with your dive partner close at hand.

What happens if a shark is circling you? ›

As the shark swims around you, keep your head on a swivel and try to maintain eye contact. “Sharks are ambush predators,” Peirce explained. “If you're turning around and facing it the whole time while it circles you, it's not going to be half as comfortable as if it's able to sneak up from behind.”

How deep do you go for shark diving? ›

How deep is the cage in the water? The cage remains afloat with about one foot of the cage above the water at all times. The cage is also solidly attached to the boat with two thick ropes that further prevent it from sinking or drifting away from the boat. The bottom of the cage is about six feet below the surface.

Are there sharks in Nassau? ›

What is the number 1 beach for shark attacks? ›

There are several reasons that New Smyrna Beach has become the "shark bite capital of the world." Director of The Florida Program of Shark Research, Gavin Naylor, told Business Insider that the main reason is that the Ponce de Leon inlet just north of the beach brings bait fish down the Halifax River into the ocean.

When can you dive with sharks in the Bahamas? ›

Diving in the Bahamas changes little from month to month. In addition to great topside conditions, November to May is also the best time for shark diving. Tiger sharks are present from October to January at Tiger Beach, and you'll find hammerhead sharks at Bimini from December-March.
