What happens at a Section 8 eligibility interview in NYC? ›

During the eligibility interview, the applicant's family size, family composition, housing priority, total family income, Social Security numbers and citizenship/immigration status are verified.

You MIGHT be rejected if the background check reveals… Drug-related crimes; • Violent crimes; or • Other crimes that could threaten the health, safety, or right to peaceful enjoyment of the building by other residents or PHA employees. The PHA will look at arrests and convictions that occurred within the past 5 years.

What can I do to expedite my application? We cannot expedite an application at the request of an individual or third party. Application selection is based on priority and original application date. If you have had an interview, ensure that you promptly comply with all requests for documentation.

After, you have attended your eligibility interview and found to be preliminarily eligible for Public Housing, you will be notified by mail that you have been placed on either the borough wait list or development wait list.

Applicants must be 18 years old and at least one member of an applying family must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-resident. The household's gross income must be under the area median income, which for a household of three, is $69,900 per year. For a household of one, the income is $54,350 per year.

The maximum housing assistance is generally the lesser of the payment standard minus 30% of the family's monthly adjusted income or the gross rent for the unit minus 30% of monthly adjusted income.

For a single extra bedroom, they can only ask you to move, not force you. There have been lawsuits and settlements in the past, so NYCHA has to follow specific procedures. They gotta give you a heads up and can't evict you if you refuse to move (with one extra bedroom).

Residents must give NYCHA 30 calendar days prior written notice when they intend to move out of their apartment, using NYCHA Form 040.032, Notice of Intent to Vacate, including the date the resident will move out.

The program works as a rental subsidy that allows families to pay a reasonable amount of their income toward their rent. Eligible families will receive a voucher to begin searching for housing. Generally, families will pay no more than 40 percent of their adjusted monthly income toward their rent share.

In order to be considered eligible to receive a Section 8 transfer voucher you must be a tenant in good standing with both NYCHA and your current landlord (ex. you cannot be facing termination of your tenancy for failure to recertify or allow inspection, and you must be current in paying your portion of rent).

How long does it take to get approved for NYCHA? ›

NYCHA applications are assigned a priority code based upon the information provided, and placed on the Housing Authority's preliminary waiting list for an eligibility interview. You should receive an acknowledgement letter from NYCHA within 30 days of receiving your application.

Section 8 HCV is a federally funded program administered by NYCHA that provides rental subsidies for eligible low-income families to rent housing in the private market. The waitlist will be open from Monday, June 3, 2024, at 12:00 AM, through Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 11:59 PM.

In preparing for the interview you may find that you can't remember everything or when certain events happened. This is not uncommon and it can help to go over some things, such as your housing history, your job history, and your hospitalization history with your caseworker.

Simply state that your property has not been approved to accept Section 8 vouchers. Make sure you give the same answer each time a prospective tenant contacts you inquiring if you take Section 8. If you're not consistent, you might invite claims that you are discriminating.
