They’re as much a part of Christmas as turkey and mince pies, but some Quality Street fans were pretty upset after noticing a big change to their favourite chocolates.

That’s because the famous flavours have returned to their roots and lost their shiny plastic wrappers in a bid to go green.

The loss of the sparkly wrapping is all part of the company’s plan that started last year, to be more eco-friendly and remove two billion pieces of packaging material by 2023. Which means the choccies are now wrapped in paper as they first were in 1936, and can now be recycled. Beautiful.

However, despite this move to be more environmentally aware, when Quality Street posted about their sustainable wrappers on Facebook, in celebration of Recycle Week – some grumpy fans were quick to share their disappointment.

‘Don’t like the wrappers,’ wrote one commenter. ‘Doesn’t feel like a special treat when you [open] the tub. A real let down. Won’t buy them again as they are no longer special.’

Others agreed: ‘You literally sucked all the joy out of Christmas,’ wrote one upset fan.

‘I just think they look drab,’ said another.

Quality Street have responded to comments, hoping to explain why the change has been made.

Replying to various upset chocolate lovers, they said: ‘We have taken a lot of time and care to make the finish of the new wrappers as beautiful as before, and have kept the colours the same, so you’ll easily be able to spot your favourites in the mix!

‘Because we are using a completely new material, the wrappers do look different. However, we hope you’ll agree that being able to place them in your household recycling more than makes up for this.’

Other Facebook users however were a little more understanding of the new wrappers.

‘Saving our planet is so much more important than a sweet wrapper, be it shiny or dull,’ wrote one eco-conscious user.

While another wrote: ‘I love the paper wrappers, all rather marvelous.’

In a statement made last year, Cheryl Allen, the head of sustainability at Nestle, says the company took a lot of deliberation over the decision.

She said: ‘Quality Street is a brand that people feel very strongly about.

‘We know that opening the lid and seeing “the jewels”, as we call them, is really important.

‘We think we’ve done a really good job with the redesign, and feel confident that people will respond positively.’

If you are still planning on picking up a tub of the Christmas staple this year, you might want to head down to John Lewis, asits Quality Street pick ‘n’ mix station is returning to stores.

No more avoiding the worst flavours, as shoppers can fill a new 1.2kg tin to the brim for £15 with a choice of the 12 iconic chocolates.

And yes, that does mean you could fill a tube entirely with green triangles and purple ones.

And in yet another sustainability move, if you’ve got an old Quality Street tin knocking around, you can fill that one up for just £12.50.
