Oreo botched its new gluten-free cookie | Oreo Rankings Part 89 (2024)

I hold these truths to be self-evident, that most Oreos are good -- if not really good. This held true for Oreo’s first experiment with a Gluten-Free cookie.

But if the classic Gluten-Free Oreo is the triumphant Revolutionary War, then the Gluten-Free Golden Oreo is the War of 1812. It confirmed that, yes, Oreos proved they can stand on their own outside the tyranny of gluten and deserve to be respected as Gluten-free cookies.

But very much like the young United States’ efforts to invade Canada, the Gluten-Free Oreo Nations’s attempt to tackle a golden won’t result in claiming any new territory.

And yes, I did call my dad (who’s a big history buff) to make sure that analogy worked.

Gluten-Free Golden Oreo

The Gluten-Free Golden Oreo is the fourth Oreo to get the non-gluten treatment -- following Classic, Double Stuf and Mint.

The original run of Gluten-Free cookies was a success. Oreo hit the nail on the head by reproducing the original chocolate cookie without losing anything.

The same cannot be said about the Gluten-Free Golden Oreo.

What do they taste like?

The Gluten-Free Golden Oreo tastes pretty similar to the original. I did a blindfolded taste test to see if I could tell the difference. For the most part, I could.

The big issue is in the golden cookie. While the original has a nice, clean vanilla sweetness. The gluten-free cookie has a bit of an off-taste. There’s a chalkiness to it that’s reminiscent of a Necco Wafer.

The consistency and texture are the same. You even get a lot of the same flavors. But when you bite into it, there’s a noticeable cloud of odd-tasting haze. It’s like the ghost of gluten remained to haunt your cookie.

So is it any good?

Yeah, it’s not bad. It’s still an Oreo, which means that it’s going to taste pretty good no matter what. If you’re not paying super close attention, you might not even notice the difference -- especially if you’re dipping it in milk.

But as far as Oreos go, this does drop a good ways down the rankings. The competition is tough.

The final word: Where does it rank?

I’m adding this Oreo to my ongoing rankings, which have been in the works since 2014, at No. 76.
