Today's Wordle answer (game #1103)

  • NYT average score: 4.0
  • My score: 5
  • WordleBot's score: 3
  • Best start word performance*: SNARE (4 remaining answers)
  • My start word performance: CHINA (117)

Today's Wordle answer (game #1103) is… KNEAD.

This is certainly a little harder than yesterday's game (see below), which ended up with an average score of 3.6. KNEAD, in comparison, is currently at 4.0 and I wouldn't be surprised if that figures rises as more people play. But while that may be true, I made a bit of a mess of it and had to settle for a distinctly under-par five. Not my finest hour.

The big complication here is the KN combination at the start. This data isn't detailed in my analysis of every Wordle answer, because I only include the top 30 starting combinations in that page, but I do have the full list squirrelled away on a spreadsheet and can tell you that among the original 2,309 solutions, there are only 10 that begin KN. That means that it ranks equal 87th in this regard, so it's really not that likely.

This is the fifth of them: KNOLL (game #219), KNOCK (#539), KNEEL (#710) and KNELT (#845) have been the others. So be warned: there are still five more to come.

That's really the only obvious problem here, other than the fact that KNEAD isn't that common a word.

Start word performance was middling; SNARE was the best of WordleBot's top 20, leaving only four possibles, but it isn't a popular choice; the best of the real favorites was CRANE, which left 30.

My starter word today was CHINA, which WordleBot said was "strong" but which could only cut the shortlist to 117. For my second guess I usually form a word from the most common remaining letters, which today would have been something like SANER. However, for reasons which I can't entirely fathom, I went for SONAR instead.

This wasn't my big mistake, though. The 'bot liked it well enough and it cut the answers list down to 10, which was not too bad. A four should have been achievable from here.

Unfortunately, I rushed the whole thing. My shortlist only had NATAL, NAVAL and VEGAN on it, and among them I decided to play NATAL in order to try to identify where the A went. What I should have done was either to find some more options, which might have led me to make a better guess, or to do what WordleBot did and play VEGAN.

NATAL did narrow down the options but still left four: BEGAN (which I still hadn't spotted, somehow), VEGAN (which was on my list), KNEAD (which wasn't) and UNJAM (ditto). In my head, the answer had to be VEGAN – so when it failed to turn green I was fairly aghast.

It took me a bit more searching to realize that KNEAD was an option (the only one left by this stage) and play it next for a disappointing 5/6.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1102)

In a different time zone where it's still Tuesday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1102, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle's 2,309 answers. In fact, it's almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was R.

R is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – it's actually the 4th most common there, behind E, Y and T.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1102) was… SAVOR.

Well, that was a rollercoaster ride. A short one, admittedly, but still very up and down. Or rather: up, then down, then up.

Before I get to my game, a note on SAVOR in general. It has an average score of 3.9 at the time of writing, but it's early days and most of the United States hasn't yet woken and started playing. [Note – it eventually finished at 3.6]. And SAVOR, as a word, is spelled 'wrongly' outside of the US – so will have been harder for those of us in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and other assorted countries to have solved.

I say it's spelled wrongly, but of course it's not really incorrect, it's just different. In fact, it's thought that the difference between the OR ending in American English and the OUR used elsewhere dates to the 18th and early 19th century, when dictionary compilers Samuel Johnson and Noah Webster decided to take different approaches. Webster, in the US, preferred the Latin OR suffix; Johnson, in the UK, a French-style OUR.

Anyway, when spelled as SAVOR, it's a word that those outside of the US may not consider, which in turn implies that as the States wake up and play Wordle, the average score will drop.

Ultimately, it's not a particular difficult Wordle. As my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, S is the most common starting letter in the game, A the most common in position #2, R is fourth at the end. V is the obvious outlier, ranking 22nd out of the 26 letters in the alphabet overall, though it jumps slightly to 17th when in the middle of a solution.

Start words may have helped today, too. A few of WordleBot's top 20 were very successful: SANER and PARSE left two answers, TASER left one. But none of them are particularly popular, so more relevant is the fact that STARE left seven and RAISE two.

And that brings me to my game. My start word, chosen at random, was REVUE – which I didn't think would be very useful, but which by virtue of the V in the middle was in fact incredibly lucky. Like RAISE, it left only a pair of words – in my case FAVOR and SAVOR.

Unfortunately – and here the rollercoaster heads on a downward slope – I picked the wrong one for my second guess. Worse still, I found out afterwards that FAVOR had been a past Wordle answer, back in the early days of the game (#209 in January 2022).

Still (rollercoaster going up again), that left me a guaranteed score of three, simply by playing SAVOR next.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
