What is the safety ranking of Italy? ›

How safe is Italy? The Global Peace Index ranks Italy as the 32nd safest country in the world, ahead of the UK (34th) and USA (129th). Italy comes 53rd out of 193 countries in the Global Organised Crime Index (OC Index).

There are currently no COVID-19-related entry restrictions in Italy. As of 1 June 2022, Covid-19 green certification is no longer required for entry into Italy from EU and non-EU countries.

Danger level: 3 - Travel with high caution.

Canada, Switzerland and Norway ranked as the top three safest countries in this year's report, replacing Netherlands, Denmark and Iceland who held the top three spots in last year's research. While the latter countries dropped out of the top three placements this year, they all remained in the top ten.

Italy is more than just a historical friend to the United States. The two nations share a strong bond, partly connected to the US's vast number of Italian expatriates and immigrant families. Italians have set down new roots in many states, including in big cities like New York and Chicago.

Tipping isn't the norm in Italy like it may be in North America and some other countries in Europe, but it is still appreciated. Feel free to leave a small amount if the service has been particularly good. In taxis, tipping is not expected, but if rounding up the charge makes life easier, go for it.
