October 1, 2023 Important Update for ERAP Applicants

New York State ERAP applications stopped being accepted after January 20, 2023, at 9:00pm Eastern Standard Time. Individuals will not be able to submit applications, or complete applications that have been started but not submitted, after 9:00pm on January 20, 2023.

If you don't want to call the refuge yourself you can be referred by your local council. You could also ask your nearest Citizens Advice to refer you. If you can't find a place in a refuge, contact your local council - they should find somewhere safe for you to stay.

Many people experiencing homelessness are housed through rental assistance, vouchers and public housing. Outside of those mainstream programs, there are a number of federal programs that work to house people experiencing homelessness, directly or indirectly.

NJEA has created the Hardship Relief Fund to help active, retired, and student members through the temporary or permanent loss of their primary residence, food insecurity, or the loss of classroom supplies or materials due to an unforeseen event.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Section 8 HCV program is based on the premise that housing costs (rent and utilities) should not exceed 30 percent of a household's income. Assistance is provided to low, and very low-income households and individuals.

Homeless shelters offer shelter, food, and supplies for homeless men, women, and families. Many people find support to transition from homelessness to permanent housing at homeless shelters, others, however, choose to live on the streets.

Housing-Based Solutions

Proven housing-based policies include: Federal housing assistance: Federal housing programs are one of the most successful housing-based solutions to reduce homelessness.

The New York State Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) will provide significant economic relief to help low and moderate-income households at risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability by providing rental arrears, temporary rental assistance and utility arrears assistance.

If you do not receive a decision after 30-45 days or before a pay date, you can check case status on ACCESS HRA or call HRA InfoLine for information at 718-557-1399. Checks are issued directly to the landlord or Housing Court, where applicable.

The CityFHEPS rental assistance program provides New Yorkers in need with financial assistance to cover the rent, helping New Yorkers experiencing homelessness exit shelter and into permanent housing and helping New Yorkers experiencing housing instability remain in their homes.

Step One: Accessing Shelter or Housing Services

You may need to call a hotline or go to a community-designated organization for homeless services. Your community may have a “homeless hotline,” “2-1-1,” or other organization/agency that serves as the “front door” to receiving any kind of help.

If you're 18 or over, contact the council's housing team to make a homelessness application. You may not get emergency housing, but you should get a personal housing plan with advice on finding a home.
