Demons are a class of creature including several different races, who all have in common that they at some point have lived on and ruled the demon world Infernus. The three known races of demons are Avernic, Chthonians, and Infernals.
With the release of the Demon flash mobsandMod Osborne's comments, it has become clear that demons can sense that the gods have a greater influence on Gielinor "they're sniffing in the air, and they can smell a change is coming",[1] this is further evidenced by Ux's ability to sense things after The World Wakes (as is shown in the The Book of the Godless).
They are generally considered to be fairly strong, except for imps, and have low defence and strength. Imps fight by using melee, but more prominent demons are known to use ranged and magic. Demons usually fight barehanded, save imps and some of the most powerful demon generals. Common demons are generally weak to ranged, but resistant towards melee; stronger and unique demons generally tend to have different weaknesses. The magical swords Silverlight and Darklight are enchanted to be especially effective against demons. Holy Water is a powerful ranged weapon against demons.
Due to their society, demons often lay out various contracts when discussing deals with other parties. These contracts are constantly rewritten until both parties agree to the terms outlined. The contract then holds for as long as the terms state, in which both parties cannot break the contract's terms. Doing so can cause various consequences, such as recall, or in the case of more complex contracts, death. Demons are generally portrayed as evil, sinister beings by Saradomin's followers, using their trickery and cunning to force others to unwillingly do their bidding, though this is not necessarily the case. Despite their cunning nature, demons have been tricked themselves before, though such cases are usually rare.
If a demon is not under a contract, then they are free to do whatever they wish.

Physiology[edit | edit source]
Most demons that exist on Gielinor partially reside in the plane - their physical bodies are actually manifested, which their soul inhabits. If the demon dies or has to kill itself for whatever reason, they do so in a magical explosion, causing their soul to return to Infernus where they begin the process of creating another physical body. However, if left with fatal wounds over a long period of time, the demon will die a natural death and leave bones behind, as shown with Thammaron. The process can be prevented by trapping the soul in a diabolus or other means. Rarely, the soul may split into multiple bodies, of which all of them share the same soul. The only two known examples of these are the Twin Furies (originally triplets) and the twins Castyx the Lascivious and Gready the Corpulent.
Depending on the type of demon slain, they tend to leave behind ashes in the form of impious, accursed or infernal ashes, which are used for both the creation of incense sticks and prayer training.
History[edit | edit source]
Early History[edit | edit source]
Demons are inhabitants of the planet Infernus. At some point after The Great Revision, when Kerapac caused Jas to inflict a curse on the entire species to protect the Stone of Jas, a subgroup of the Dragonkin, the Aughra, escaped into the Abyss by projecting into the bodies of abyssal creatures there. Unsatisfied with their lot, a group led by Kalger proceeded to project themselves into Avernic bodies and became known as the Infernals, where they ruled the planet until being overthrown by the Chthonians, a group of demons who invaded Infernus after being exiled from Erebus.
The Chthonians would rule Infernus with an iron fist, enslaving the Avernic, though unable to consume them for reasons unknown. To prevent rampant cannibalism among the Chthonians, laws were made that only allowed consumption of other demons through legal trickery. The demon Hostilius soon became the planet's ruler, who became extremely massive from outwitting and consuming his rivals.
Zaros' Influence[edit | edit source]
After fleeing from Mah, the divine creation Zaros travelled the multiverse, visiting hundreds of other primordial realms until he stumbled into Infernus. There, he met the first intelligent lifeforms outside of himself, Seren and Mah. He took note of their intricate culture, civilisation and language, all of which had been foreign to him. When he left, he would take these concepts and introduce them to the vampyres of Vampyrium.
Upon discovering Gielinor, Zaros discovered that the lesser gods were carving the lands as their own. Angered by their arrogance, he decided to teach them obedience, seeing it as his duty. He returned to Infernus and requested twelve legions of demons from Hostilius in order to achieve this goal. Hostilius, corpulent and refusing to concede even a single drop of power, entered a contract with him in that only the eldest signatory would have control of the legions. Zaros took notice of the deception but paid it no heed. As the contract was fulfilled, Hostilius laughed in triumph, but Zaros immediately humbled him and the audience by revealing that he was even older than him, thus Hostilius was forced to concede the legions to him and gain nothing in return.
Zaros would use the legions to establish control over the surrounding lands, subduing the hydra god Loarnab and using its power to bring the other legions to Gielinor. The demons, far stronger than the local inhabitants, humans, quickly relished in their luxurious lifestyle and began growing feelings of rebellion against their Chthonian masters. After the Mahjarrat were brought into the Zarosian Empire, the Legatus Maximus, Zamorak, soon mutinied against Zaros. As Zaros' loyalty was absolute, Zamorak managed to convince the demons to support him by promising to overthrow the Chthonians if they helped him usurp Zaros. In the process, Zamorak ascended into godhood, where the demons brought him back to Infernus so he could fulfil his promise. In the span of nineteen years, Zamorak and the Avernic successfully overthrew the Chthonians, killing many and exiling others to the Abyss. Some of these Chthonians, such as Ripper Demons, would change allegiances.
Demons would play a prominent role in Zamorak's forces throughout the ages, such as K'ril Tsutsaroth, Thammaron and The Ripper.
Present day[edit | edit source]
The Chthonian demons that were exiled to the Abyss would soon become divided, with some remaining loyal to the remaining Zarosian dukes and others being discovered by the Infernals, who took their revenge and re-enslaved them. They are currently fighting over Hostilius' corpse.
After the Elder God Wars concluded, Zamorak began transporting large numbers of demons from Infernus to Gielinor to begin his invasion of the planet, knowing that his enemies' forces were severely depleted. With no other choice, the gods agreed to let the World Guardian re-establish the Edicts of Guthix despite the fact that they would be expelled. Upon locating a massive Zamorakian centre in Senntisten's undercity, the World Guardian fought their way through to Zamorak and defeated him, re-establishing the Edicts. Zamorak's sudden departure caused a rift between his demonic and his other followers, causing a civil war to erupt over leadership.
The demons, led by K'ril Tsutsaroth, initially had the upper hand due to their ability to reform and devastating tactics formed by Avaryss, the Unceasing, but after Moia captured her, the advantage was lost and the demons were quickly pushed back. Avaryss' sister, Nymora, the Vengeful, felt that the war was lost and did not want to lose her remaining sister, causing her to betray K'ril. Bilrach, the leader of the other faction, expelled K'ril back to Infernus. The remaining demons surrendered and rallied under him, and later Moia when she overthrew him as leader.

Update history[edit | edit source]
This information has been compiled as part of the update history project. Some updates may not be included – see here for how to help out!
- patch 20 January 2020(Update):
- "Demons" cluster slayer assignment now counts imps as demons.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- With 11 different bosses, demons are some of, if not the most common quest bosses.
- According to Evil Dave, hellrats are demons and are the lowest form of demon, weaker even than imps. Players cannot kill hellrats, but pet cats can.
- Reldo in Postbag from the Hedge reveals that all demons have true names. They do not reveal their true name, however, because "names have powers". Demons that reveal their true names are usually so powerful that the name cannot bind them anymore; K'ril Tsutsaroth is an example.
- True demons used to drop regular ashes as their 100% drop. After an update, they now drop corresponding ashes of their type (imps, icefiends and pyrefiends drop impious ashes; death spawn, greater demons and lesser demons drop accursed ashes; and abyssal demons, nechryael, black demons, demon bosses, tormented demons, the three demons from the Underground Pass and K'ril and his bodyguards drop infernal ashes).
