Assassin’s Creed Odyssey crashes at launch or after a few minutes of gameplay

There could be a number of reasons why your game or whole PC system might be crashing. Some of the most popular reasons are missing DLL files, which you can attempt to fix via this link.

Be sure that you have updated your video card drivers. Both Nvidia and AMD should have updated drivers that are optimized specifically for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. I don’t own an AMD card, so I can only vouch for the Nvidia team – Driver 411.70 is well optimized for the game and improves its FPS (at least on my hardware). Forum userorduluaslanreported that a clean-installation of the latest Nvidia driver and uninstalling the Geforce Experience helped them fix the crashing.

In the first days after the Early Access began there are a number of complaints and most seems to be related to the “old CPU” issue.

Many players reported on the Ubisoft forums that like Origins, Odyssey does not run on CPUs that don’t support AVX. If or when Ubisoft patches the game to support older CPUs, you should give it a try again. Asyaisuah reported on the forums, CPUs from the following generations may not work with Odyssey at the moment:

  • First generation Intel i3, i5, i7 processor or older (Eg. i7 920, i7 960, etc.)
  • Intel Pentium processors (Eg. G4560, G2030, etc.)
  • AMD Phenom processors (Eg. X6 1090T)

There is a small chance that this might be fixed by Ubisoft, because apparently the same issue was never officially addressed by the developers for Origins last year. You may try this fix from Reddit userIFrAgMenTIx.

Go to the folder where your assassinscreedorigins startup .exe is located. Right click on it and set properties. -)Run as admin -)Run in compatibility mode windows 8 -)create a shortcut of the .exe on your desktop and later start the game from there

Next I uninstalled Rivatuner(you might also be able to just disable it)

Open geforce experience and adjust the AC:O settings so that you can run the game in borderless window mode or windowed mode (important)

If you want to play the game at a lower res than your actual set screen resolution I suggest that you set your screen to a lower resolution since the game doesn’t scale up(feelsbadman). [I needed to do this since I can’t play the game in 4K without frying my GPU – only 2K is possible]

If there is any official answer or a solution to the “old CPU” issue, I will update this post, so check back later. Meanwhile if your game keeps crashing during gameplay, see if any of your hardware components isn’t overheating (usually GPU or CPU). Lower the graphical settings gradually until the performance stabilizes itself and you can play normally.

UPDATE ON THE AVX ISSUE AND OLDER CPU SUPPORT:

Ubisoft responded to the complains from fans regarding the issues Assassin’s Creed Odyssey AVX issues and lack of older CPU support.

Trouble Downloading or Updating Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

The first thing you should try, when having slow download speed or disconnects, is connect to an ethernet cable if you are not already. If you are, consider trying a different cable, restart your router or even your machine. When you unplug your router, leave it this way for a few minutes before you plug it back in.

Your connection issues might also be a result of a software that you have installed. In some cases disabling the anti-virus or internet security tool might be the answer.

If the issues with downloading are more serious, you may need professional help. Ubisoft has an official guide for you to try when you are experiencing troubles installing and/or updating your game via their PC client Uplay. The key things to do are run Uplay as admin, turn off Windows Firewall, make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive, check if you can run selective startup and more. Here are the steps you can take to fix that:

Running Uplay as admin

  1. Navigate to the executable files for Uplay on the hard drive – Default Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher
  2. Right-click on the executable file and select to Run as Administrator

Turning off Windows Firewall: Follow the steps on thislink

How to check the amount of free space on your hard disk:Follow the steps on thislink.

If the issue persists, try downloading the game while inSelective Startup. Remember to alsolaunch UPlay as administratorafter restarting your computer.

Selective Startup

1.Hold down yourWindows Keyand press theRkey to bring up theRun prompt
2. In theRun windowtypemsconfigand clickOKto open theSystem Configuration Utility
3. Click on theStartup Tab, then click theDisable Allbutton
4. ClickOKand thenrestart your systemwhen prompted

Throttle download bandwidth

1. Click the menu icon in the upper left hand corner
2. SelectSettings
3. Click on theDownloadstab
4. Under theBandwidth Usage Limitmove the slide bar to 2MB/s or lower.
5. Try downloading the game again.

Deleting your cache may also help you get to download the game or an update for it.

Error trying to download AC: Odyssey Language pack

If you are having troubles downloading the French (or any other) language pack for the game from the Microsoft store for the Xbox One version, you may want to know that this is a known issue. This has been reported on the Ubisoft forums and should be updated very soon.

UserDerMimeyadded in the comments here below this article that apparently there is a similar issue with the German language pack. Ubisoft should take care of this hopefully soon.

AC: Odyssey stuttering effect and glitches on PlayStation 4

If the game stutters or glitches while you play as in the movements of the characters are not fluid, but look weird and irregular, there’s one thing the Ubisoft support suggest you try: rebuild your PS4 database. If you turn off the console, then turn it back on by holding the power button on the console until you hear two beeps, it will open in the safe mode menu and you can select rebuild database there.

If you are on Windows 10 with the Creators update (or newer one), you can see if this method, suggested by reddit useru/marts_sumwill work for you:

  1. Download EmptyStandbyList and put it somewhere where you won’t move it https://wj32.org/wp/software/empty-standby-list/
  2. Right click > Properties and select Run as Admin under compatibility.
  3. Open Task Scheduler > Create Task on the far right
  4. General Tab (give it a name). Under security options > Change user or group > Advanced > Find Now > go down and choose SYSTEM (important to make it run silently in the background). Tick ‘Run with highest privileges’ and ‘Hidden’ at the bottom. Pictures here https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6568736/how-do-i-set-a-windows-scheduled-task-to-run-in-the-background
  5. Triggers tab > New > On a schedule > One Time. Tick repeat task every 5 minutes (possibly excessive but it causes no issues). Also choose ‘for the duration of: indefinitely’
  6. Actions tab > Start A program > Point to the EmptyStandbyList.exe file.
  7. Done! Standby memory is automatically cleared every 5mins.

Stuttering may be caused also by outdated video card drivers or generally old/outdated hardware components. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is quite hungry for CPU power. I suggest you check the temperatures of your CPU and GPU and make sure they are not overheating.

How to fix the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Freezing Problem

If your game freezes up while you play and nothing can be done, first see if you can force-close the game (ALT+F4 on PC, for example). If this is impossible, your whole PC or console may be frozen. In this case you will have to hard-reboot it.

If the problem is not fixed and you play on PC with an older CPU, this could be the reason for your performance issues. The game is very heavy on the CPU in general. Check the “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey crashes at launch or after a few minutes of gameplay”paragraph to learn why some older generations CPUs have trouble running the game.

How to fix possible Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Performance Issues

The game is not optimized perfectly right at launch. Make sure your hardware is compatible. The PC System requirements are quite steep and older CPUs (as discussed previously in this post).

A common answer to solving poor performance is updating your video card drivers. My machine runs with an Nvidia GPU, but I am certain the AMD team has a new and optimized drivers for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The Green team’s driver is 411.70 and my Benchmark showed about 15% increase in performance compared to my test before I updated it.

There are certain areas that seem to be poorly optimized and cause severe FPS drops in the first days. Ubisoft developers are aware of that issue and are working on a fix. Check the Patch Notes section here on VULKK.com to learn when a new update is released and what improvements it brings.

If you play on a console and are experiencing performance drops, simply restart your game and (if needed) your console too. If the problem persists, contact Ubisoft Customer Service or write them a ticket.

In general every update to the game introduces tweaks and performance improvements.

How to fix your Glowing Character in tall grass in AC: Odyssey

In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey when you crouch down to hide among the grass, preparing to assassinate your next target, you might have noticed that your character has this kind of annoying glowing/flashing effect. Turns out this can be easily switched off. Reddit userViliarprovided a quick solution: Turning off the Enemy Proximity setting in the HUD tab of the Settings menu, will allow you to enjoy a more natural looking crouching Alexios or Kassandra.

Purchased AC: Odyssey, but In-Game Items and Missions are missing

There have been multiple cases reported by players where the In-Game items or even missions part of the various game packages and editions have not been properly delivered. The first thing you need to do is make sure the items are listed as “owned” in the Ubisoft Store. if they are, then you should receive the items in your inventory when you log in to the game. If the items are not listed as owned, then you better write to Customer Support and ask them to check.

Some of the in-game items require higher levels to use, such as the Kronos and Herald of Dusk gear sets, that are part of the Deluxe edition – in this case you need to be level 5 to put them on, but they should still be visible in your inventory from the very beginning.

Some missions that are part of the various game editions are also suitable for higher level players and you will only be able to see and do them when you meet the requirements.

Unable to Fast Travel in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

If you find yourself unable to use the Fast Travel feature in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the first thing you have to check is your current location. In most cases this is not about a bug that you are experiencing, but simply because you are standing in an area from which the game’s mechanics do not allow you to fast travel. A good example for that are soldier camps.

If this is not your case and you are constantly having trouble with fast travel, then you should write a ticket to Ubisoft’s Customer Service.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Fast Travel Glitch during A Night to Remember mission

There is a game-breaking bug where fast travel glitches and you are unable to get out or to a place. Reddit useru/bromx28discovered that this can happen in two locations. The first is during “A Night To Remember” on Mykanos. It seems that the glitch happens right after you talk to Barnabas. A possible workaround is to manually go to the location of the next objective – this will fix the quest’s objectives and resume normal functioning.

To find the next two objectives during the bugged state, either go tocenter of the southern area of the isle of Mykanos andlook for a figure standing on a small island. The second objective is directly north-east of this location, it is a bit harder to describe than the first location, but one location should be all you need to get your game working again.

This may not completely fix the quest “A Night to Remember” as there is another bugged objective after this, but your fast travel system should be back in place. So to complete this quest we’ll just have to wait till Ubisoft patches it.

The second instance of this glitch happens at a much later stage in the game, at a spoiler-y surprise location. I do not know how to fix the second instance of the glitch, but a similar solution might work (until the devs can fix it).

Credit for this workaround goes tou/bromx28.

Stuck on a Quest and cannot continue?

With each major update Ubisoft announces a ton of bug fixes. Among them often are corrections of issues with various quests and locations. If you have been unable to get past a certain objective, an NPC is missing form its expected location or something else has happened, that wasn’t supposed to – you have encountered a bug.

Here is the most recent list of quest-related bugs that have been fixed with Update 1.1.1:

  • Addressed an issue in Gluten Free where Lagos’s son could pop up in dialogues when released before triggering the cut-scene.
  • Addressed an issue in A Mother’s Prayer that prevented the player from completing the quest.
  • Addressed an issue in To Find a Girl where Thugs would chicken out of combat if their leader is knocked out in front of them.
  • Addressed an issue in Barnabas Abroad that could prevent the quest from being completed.
  • Addressed an issue in The Final Push that could cause the quest’s objective to disappear.
  • Addressed an issue in Pirate Hospitality that prevented the quest objective to update.
  • Addressed an issue in Unified Front where Euneas would sail away from the naval battle instead of helping the player.
  • Addressed various issues in the Divine Intervention questline that could prevent the quest from being completed.
  • Addressed an issue in Follow That Boat where Kleio could spawn underwater if the player cleaves the ship during the follow Erina objective.
  • Addressed an issue in Breaking Bread where the recommended Quest level differs from the actual level of enemy NPCs in the Fort of Arkas.
  • Addressed an issue in A Bloody Feast where the player could maintain a full bounty bar under certain circ*mstances.
  • Removed a dramatic black fade from a cut-scene in Athlete.
