Apricot season is almost here; know why you should NEVER overeat the fruit (1)

Apricots should be soaked in water overnight and then had an empty stomach in the morning for better effect

New Delhi: Summers are approaching and so is the season of juicy and delicious apricots. The golden-yellow fruit is rich in vitamin A, beta-carotene, and other carotenoids. Apricots are also excellent for promoting eye health and reducing the risk of various diseases like macular degeneration and cataracts.

Discovered by the Romans in ancient times, Apricots contain various phytochemicals like aspolyphenols, which are flavonoids and phenolic acids, and carotenoids that add to their colour, taste, and nutritional value.

Apricots, apart from being consumed fresh, are also popular dry fruits, that enhance flavour of dishes and are loaded with vitamins and iron.

According to health experts, a cup of dried apricots also contains potassium and antioxidants and has been known to lower cholesterol and improve digestion.

But like with every other food, the fruit is good if only eaten in moderation. They can cause the following problems:

Digestive issues

Apricots are packed with fibre, which is an essential mineral for human health. It helps in regulating bowel movements and ensures good gut health.

However, too much fibre can cause massive side effects, as apricots if over-eaten can irritate your stomach and cause cramps, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhoea.

Weight gain

Overconsumption of apricots can also cause unhealthy weight gain.

Can cause headache

Apricot kernels are rich in a compound called amygdalin, which converts into cyanide after consumption. Cyanide poisoning can lead to nausea, headaches, thirst, lethargy, nervousness, fever, joint pain, muscle pain, and reduced blood pressure.

Dried apricots can cause allergies

People who suffer from allergies should be careful while eating apricots. In their dried form, apricots can have Sulphites, which can seriously impact asthma and induce asthmatic attacks.

How many apricots should be eaten in a day?

According to the US Department of Agriculture, you should eat around 1-2 cups of fruit every day. However, some fruits like apricots should be consumed under a recommended portion which is 30 g of one fruit or 3-4 dried apricots.

According to health experts, apricots should be soaked in water overnight and then had an empty stomach in the morning for better effect.
